Some ludicrous gags, a likable leading guy, and excellent joke performances by Graham and Tomei improve this choppy feel-good flick. The Plough and the Stars: This is a boring, theatrical style film of a Sean OCasey play with Foster as Irish a revolutionary leader and Stanwyck as his long-agonizing spouse who prays for his life. It is bundled with hot babes, cool automobiles, intense games action, and high tech devices galore. Raintree County: Clift is a small town Hoosier who makes the blunder of wedding Southern belle Taylor before the start of the Civil War. Intense performances and memorable Johnny Green score help make up for the over-long script. Clift was maimed in near-lethal automobile mishap throughout production, and his work understandably agonizes for it. Cast includes Elizabeth Taylor, Montgomery Clift, Eva Marie Savior, Lee Marvin, and Nigel Patrick. (168 minutes,'57)
The Last Temptation of Christ: An imaginative and inciting film from Nikos Kazantzakis' novel which presumes in regards to Jesus' self-questions when he realizes that he has been selected by The Lord to tote His message. Moments of incredible beauty are reduced somehow by mundane discussion and dull scenes. Cast includes William Dafoe, Harvey Keitel, Barbara Hershey, Harry Dean Stanton, David Bowie, Vema Bloom, Andre Gregory, Juliette Caton, Roberts Blossom, Irvin Kershner, Nehemiah Persoff, and Barry Miller.
