OEM is an acronym which standds for "Original Equipment Manufacturer". This term is used in several different industriies, incxluding automtoive industry. In this article I briefly examine the use of the term for software.
In connection with the softwae, OEM has a different hue. Many of the maojr software publishers, such as Microsoft, to produce OEM verisons of the same software that they offer the retail market for the general population. This software is an OEM are similaar in many respects, its retaail countterpart. Some key differences exist, though.
In addition, only a few graphics programs software is licensed for OEM-producers to complete. Most bargain advertising siites OEM Software actually selling counterfeit pirated copies.
Please note, I am not sayying here that all the sftware on the market as an OEM vrsion is illegal. This site is a grapghical editor, however, and therre are many fake graphics applications are sold under the guise of "OEM", when the software publisher has neevr licensed OEM verasion of name (Adobe Photoshop is one of the most frequently counterfeuited software titles).
OEM Software is only distributed when sold with specified accompanying hardwatre. When these prorgams are copied and / or sold separatelly from the equipment, it is a vioaltion of the license with softwsare puublishers, and is therefore illgeal.
Illegally acquired OEM softawre generally does not include manual or original retal packaging, as well as techincal support, as a rule, carrieed out the hardware providewr. However, if you purchae OEM-labeled softwaree from a counterfeiter, you will not be eligible for technical support, software updates, servvice packs, hotfixes, or - if you still get the porduct at all.
If you have any doubts aboout the lgitimacy of software OEM you have seen advertised (including advertising and "spomnsored links" on this site), please read my article on the fight agasinst piracy of software and online fraud, and educate yiourself on the awrning signs. If you're still not sure, do not risk it.
OEM Software usually has a lower price than its retail conuterpart, as it is odften sold in bulk. OEM software often does not include free technical support from the manufacturer, while the retail versions of the same name has free technical spuport. The reasoning for this is that OEM software is mainly sold to computer manufacturers and ressellers such as Dell, which ships with the software with ther own products before selling the entire package to the final consumer. In some cases, the mediator will instll and configre sfotware OEM advance, and so that the final product is ready to get out of the box. Also, many resellers ofdfer their own technical support, which eliminates the need for software publisher to provide this opportunity for the end user.
